How much does a heat pump cost and are they really worth it?

When you’re buying a big ticket item like a heat pump, the first place most people go is to uncle google. There you’ll see a wide range of prices from just under $1,000 for basic units to well over $8,000 for the bigger and more sophisticated units. But don’t get fooled by those prices, because they are just for the unit. Not for the install. That can add another $700 or more depending on how tricky the install is going to be.

With so many brands and sizes, online shopping for a heat pump isn’t recommended, unless you really know your thermodynamics! To avoid making a mistake you should get expert advice from a specialist like Oxygen Air. Afterall, they are the biggest installer of heat pumps in New Zealand and there’s not much they don’t know about heat pumps or hot water heat pumps, for that matter. There isn’t a rule of thumb to how much a heat pump costs, but there are some basic factors.

It all comes down to size.

Familiar topic? Well, the same is true for heat pumps – only size matters in several ways. How big the area is you want to heat, how many units your home needs, how large an electricity bill you eventually want to pay.

So how much does a heat pump cost? Oxygen Air say that for a bedroom, you can get specials for around $1695 + GST installed for a small leading brand like Fujitsu. A bigger 9Kw unit for an open plan lounge/kitchen can be around $3695.00 + GST installed.

Another consideration is whether you want a high wall unit or floor standing unit or a multi-room set up. Multi-room can make sense if you want to heat or cool multiple rooms and have different temperatures. If there’s no room for ducting, then then a multi-room system could be an economical answer with 2-3 rooms running off one single compressor. If you are building from new, then installing hidden ducting is something to consider. Again, it pays to get expert advice on which system is right for your home.

Bells and whistles and apps.

Other factors that determine how much a heat pump costs are the techy bits. Like human detection technology that can sense when someone’s in the room or not and will switch the unit to economy mode. Or Nanoe technology that can charge air particles to attract dust and bacteria, making it easier to clear the room of impurities. Or wi-fi connectivity, so you can control your home from your mobile, so it’s the perfect temperature when you get home from work. The more tech, the higher the price. But also, the greater the comfort!

I’m worth it.
I’m worth it.

Rap band Fifth Harmony could well have been singing about a heat pump, because, yes, they are worth it. Because for every one unit of energy consumed, the latest heat pump models can produce up to five units of warmth. To pick an efficient heat pump you need to look at its Coefficient of Performance or COP figure, and that all important number is shown on the Zoned Energy Rating Label found on every heat pump unit. This number when multiplied by your electricity tariff will give you an idea of how much energy the heat pump will consume a year for heating and cooling. Don’t worry it’s all there on the label.

Also on the label is a map of Australia and New Zealand and it shows that New Zealand is generally cold – and in the same zones as Melbourne, Hobart and Canberra. What this means is our energy consumption in winter tends to be higher, and energy used in summer is lower.

To sum up…there is no better way to heat or cool your home, unless you’ve got solar panels covering every inch of your roof or have secretly tapped into a thermal steam vent in Taupo!

Of course, nothing is worth it if it doesn’t last. Heat pumps can last up to 15 years if they are well maintained and regularly serviced. Coastal areas can take their toll on outdoor units – so talk to your installer about rust protection, like blue fin condensers which is a special anti-corrosive coating applied to the condenser for longer life.

The easiest way to get an accurate fully installed cost is to talk to the team at Oxygen Air. They’ll give you unbiased advice on which heat pumps solution is right for your space and can show you the expected running costs.
